As we that are left

2014 marks the start of four years of commemoration of a conflict which took millions from us and which affected millions more around the world. The First World War has always fascinated and moved me, ever since my parents showed me the film version of All Quiet on the Western Front when I was a child. I’m not sure I’ll be able to get through all the commemorations without several emotional meltdowns.

This year sees the release of a story I wrote about a soldier returned from the war. It is a romance, but the driving force behind the man’s fascination is the impact the war has had on him. He is withdrawn and disturbed, but underneath it all lies a simmering passion which needs to be understood. In the story, he meets a young woman who is able to do that. Out of the Storm is published with Xcite Books later this year, as part of their Secret Library imprint, but here’s a sneak peek of the lovely cover. It captures the brooding introspection of the male protagonist very well.
